Deadline to sign up for Covered Calif. quickly approaches - KCRA Sacramento

On the eve of the deadline to sign up for Covered California, many were still rushing to enroll on Saturday, despite significant warning that the date was approaching.

Watch report: Covered California registration deadline approaches

In Sacramento County, a nonprofit organization called Sacramento Covered is helping people during the last-chance enrollment days.

The deadline to enroll for Covered California is Monday at 11:59 p.m.

Jorge Estrada waited in line to enroll in Covered California. He is currently uninsured.

“I've been lucky,” said Estrada.

Sitting patiently, waiting for his turn, the 30-year-old construction worker told KCRA 3 that he has never had a serious illness and had not seen a doctor in years.

Sacramento Covered helped people like Estrada enroll for health care under Covered California.

“There are those who started and need help understanding the plans," said Joil Xiolg, Sacramento Covered director of operations. "There are those who haven't started and need that in-person, face-to-face connection."

After two hours of waiting, Estrada's name was called. He said that he believes having health insurance will mean having a safety net for the first time.

“It's always good to have a backup plan," Estrada said. "Now, I'll have one."

For people who have made it to a certain point in the application process, the deadline will be extended until April 15 to allow people to complete the application.

Those who do not sign up will likely face a tax penalty.
