Will Ferrell takes on Red Hot Chili Peppers' Chad Smith in epic drum-off on ... - New York Daily News

When the going gets tough, the tough get jammin'!

Funnyman Will Ferrell and Red Hot Chili Peppers' Chad Smith battled until the end in an epic drum-off Thursday night.

The lookalike duo smashed, slapped and bashed the percussion as they fought each other during "The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon."

Under the host's watchful eye, the pair increased the complexity of their solos in each successive round.

The highly anticipated battle began earlier this year when Ferrell participated in an "Ask Me Anything" chat on Reddit, in which one fan noted his resemblance to Smith.

"It has been acknowledged many times that myself and Chad Smith, drummer for the Red Hot Chili Peppers, share a resemblance to each other," Ferrell wrote at the time. "A lot of people think that it's me playing for the Red Hot Chili Peppers. But that would be an insult to Chad Smith. The truth of the matter is there is no Will Ferrell. Only Chad Smith."

Smith eventually responded and agreed to participate in a drum-off for charity, with Ferrell raising money for Cancer for College and Smith for Little Kids Rock.

"I'm all for it. But unless Will's been practicing or is secretly a crazy, wild drummer, I think it'll be evident right off the bat who the real Chad Smith is," the rocker said. "I'm ready to take him down."

What Smith may not have prepared for, however, was Ferrell's secret weapon.

The actor, perhaps aided by Questlove acting as ghost drummer off to his side, was declared winner of the clash after he began rocking out on the cowbell he famously used during his "Saturday Night Live" days.

The rest of Smith's band then surprised the audience by rocking up to perform the Blue Oyster Cult classic "Don't Fear the Reaper" on stage.
