Seahawks turn back feisty Rams on game-ending goal-line stand - ESPN

Wilson Praises Seahawks' D After Win

ST. LOUIS -- The Seattle Seahawks struggled on offense against the scrappy St. Louis Rams, so they had to leave Monday night's game in the hands of one of the NFL's stingiest defenses.

With its back on the goal line, the defense answered the challenge.

The Seahawks stuffed Daryl Richardson on third-and-goal and then caused Kellen Clemens to overthrow his intended target in the corner of the end zone on the final play of a nerve-wracking 14-9 victory.

"The defense did a tremendous job, coming up with a huge stop there," said Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson, who was sacked a career-high seven times.

The outcome capped a lousy night for St. Louis sports fans. The Cardinals lost 3-1 to the Boston Red Sox in Game 5 of the World Series, played just up Broadway at Busch Stadium.

"I'm proud of our guys," Rams coach Jeff Fisher said. "We felt like we had a chance."

Seattle (7-1) extended the best start in franchise history despite gaining just 135 yards, with 80 coming on Wilson's second TD pass to Golden Tate. It was the third-fewest yards in a victory for the Seahawks, and their seven first downs were the fewest in a win in franchise history.

"We were very fortunate," Seahawks coach Pete Carroll said. "Under the circumstances with a new quarterback, they did a great job. We just couldn't get going on offense. Fortunately, the defense hung together and gave us a chance to win the game."

Clemens finished with 158 yards passing in place of the injured Sam Bradford, but he also threw two interceptions. Zac Stacy ran for a career-high 134 yards for the Rams (3-5).

"It's not always going to be pretty," said Seahawks cornerback Richard Sherman, who made his fourth interception of the season. "You have to be able to win ugly."

The World Series no doubt contributed to the stale atmosphere inside the Edward Jones Dome, where the announced crowd of 55,966 was in reality much smaller. Many of the fans who did show up wore Cardinals gear, and Red Sox-Cardinals highlights were shown on the big screen.

Greg Zuerlein staked St. Louis to an early lead with the first of his three field goals, but Sherman's pick put the Seahawks in business. Seattle scored six plays later, when Wilson hit Tate from the 2-yard line.

Zuerlein got the Rams within 7-6 late in the third quarter, but the Seahawks answered again.

Wilson went deep down the sideline to Tate, who made an acrobatic leaping catch over Janoris Jenkins. Tate regained his balance and then mockingly waved at safety Rodney McLeod as he ran to the end zone, earning an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty.

"He just was so in the moment and just made an unbelievable catch," Wilson said. "You've got to give him credit for just attacking the football right there."

Tate apologized after the game, NFL.com reported.

"That was immature of me. Hurt my team. I've gotta stay composed. ... Act like I've been there before," Tate said, according to the website. "I gotta apologize to our special teams. I put them in an awkward situation, but more happy to get up and learn from it and move forward."

Zuerlein connected again to get St. Louis to 14-9, but he missed a 50-yard field goal in the fourth quarter. That proved to be critical because the Rams would have needed just another field goal from him on their final drive, rather than a touchdown, to steal the win.

They still had a chance after they took over at their 3-yard line with just more than five minutes left and methodically marched down field. They had first-and-goal at the Seattle 6 with about a minute left, and Richardson carried the ball to the 2.

An encroachment call on Seattle put the ball at the 1, but Richardson was stuffed on third down and Clemens misfired on fourth down as the final seconds ticked off the clock.

"We needed 97 yards; we got 96," Clemens said. "There was such a great sense of resolve in the huddle as soon as I walked in the huddle. Everybody knew. Nobody really had to say anything. We gave ourselves a [chance to] win at the end, but unfortunately we didn't make the play."

Game notes

Rams DE Robert Quinn had three sacks, all in the first half. ... Seattle had minus-1 yard of offense in the first quarter and 38 yards at the half, its fewest since gaining 37 in the first half against the Kansas City Chiefs in 1998, according to STATS LLC. ... Seahawks WR Sidney Rice left late in the first half with a knee injury and did not return.

49ers Q&A: What's Nnamdi Asomugha's fate? - Sacramento Bee (blog)

Franco Mazzoli ?@MazzoliFranco
Q: Can you see the #49ers getting rid of Nnamdi Asomugha when Eric Wright will be ready to play?

A: Yes, that seems to be the plan. It's not that Asomugha played poorly when he was being used earlier this year. It's that he's 32 and in the final year of his deal. The 49ers must look to the future at the position, and they want to see what Wright, 28, can do to help them determine the future at the position.

Wright likely will be activated during or just after the bye. Nov. 4 is the last day to do so. At that point, they must make a corresponding roster move. If Asomugha indeed is cut, the Saints might be the team that picks him up. Asomugha is inactive today. He's been a healthy scratch the last three weeks.

Teddy Verdun ?@TeddyVerdun
Q: Why take time & resources to help Wright get back into football when there is no guarantee he will resign?

A: Yes, no guarantees. But Wright is from San Francisco and described playing for the 49ers as a dream come true earlier this month. That is, they should at least have a slight edge in re-signing him if he reaches free agency. They also have the opportunity to extend his contract before March if they like what they see. Trent Baalke's been a fan for some time ...

El Lobo ?@SFGLobo
Q: should the Niners wait until after the bye week to activate Manningham, even if he's ready?

A: Remember - just because he's active doesn't mean he will play. Seven players are not in uniform for every game, after all. Having said that, the 49ers must have thought Manningham was fully recovered from his knee injury when they allowed him to start practicing with the team nearly two weeks ago. They could have done so at any point until Week 11. That they did it on the early end means they are confident in Manningham's knee.

Larry Brown wants NBA to honor retired Allen Iverson - USA TODAY

Eric Prisbell, USA TODAY Sports 6:10 p.m. EDT October 30, 2013

DALLAS — When Larry Brown first told his SMU players a few weeks ago which former NBA player was scheduled to speak to them, freshman Keith Frazier became so emotional he started crying.

Other former pros like David Robinson and Avery Johnson also gave inspired talks to Brown's SMU players this month. But there was one in particular, Allen Iverson, who left players in awe.

"Allen was phenomenal," Brown said Wednesday. "He told them a lot of things kids needed to hear. He was really humble. He spoke for about 45 minutes. He coul d have spoken for three hours and nobody would have moved."

LEGACY: How we should remember Iverson

IVERSON'S SPEECH: "I don't regret anything"

As Iverson prepares to officially retire in a pregame ceremony Wednesday night before the Philadelphia 76ers host the Miami Heat, Brown reflected on his ex-star's legacy and influence.

"He is the best player his size to ever play the game," Brown, who coached Iverson from 1997 to 2003, said of the 6-0, 165-pound guard. "And maybe the toughest, maybe as good of an athlete that has ever played our game, and as good of an competitor. I hope everyone understands that."

As the Sixers' coach, Brown understood Iverson's appeal because, he said, many people just knew him as the man who coached Allen Iverson and made him practice. But he fully grasped Iverson's influence in recent years when, while out of coaching, he would visit college practices and "every kid wanted to talk to me about Allen."

"It was always about Allen," Brown said. "I used to tell him all the time, 'You don't know just what you mean to so many people.' He would never fathom that."

Iverson, who famously crossed Michael Jordan over as a rookie in March 1997, was known for his irrepressible scoring ability and for how hard he always played (in games, not necessarily in practice).

"I just wish there was some way the league could honor him," Brown said. "It is one thing doing it in Philly when they retire his jersey. But he needed to go to every arena and have people show what he meant."

Detroit Lions announce community focused approach to Thanksgiving halftime ... - detroitlions.com

DETROIT– The Detroit Lions have announced a community focused approach for halftime of their traditional Thanksgiving Day game November 28, 2013 against the Green Bay Packers. The Thanksgiving halftime will kick off the NFL’s Week 13 celebration of the NFL PLAY 60 initiative and go beyond just music on the field to the team’s reach in the community.

The Lions, United Way, Playworks and their community partners collaborated on Meet Up and Eat Up with the Lions throughout September and October. Their efforts helped educate Detroit Public School children and the community about the importance of active play and eating fresh fruits and vegetables and their accessibility within the city.

FOX, who is broadcasting the game nationally, will air a vignette at halftime featuring Meet Up and Eat Up with the Lions.

“Civic responsibility is something we take very seriously,” said Tom Lewand, Detroit Lions Team President. “Displaying our efforts to improve health and wellness to a national audience is a great opportunity to leverage the value of the Lions and the NFL to raise awareness for a cause that impacts not just Detroit, but communities across the nation.”

In-stadium entertainment will feature a performance of “Never Gonna Let You Go” by Michigan native singer/songwriter Tony Lucca. The program will also include the Walled Lake Central marching band, hundreds of other Detroit area youth and a “One Detroit, One Pride” card stunt sponsored by Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan. During the halftime performance, fans will be encouraged to get up and move in keeping with the message of NFL PLAY 60. Additional in-stadium elements include: all fans receiving Lions PLAY 60-branded eye black and 11 PLAY 60 youth ambassadors running from the tunnel prior to player introductions.

Lucca was a finalist for the hit music competition series The Voice in 2012. In June he returned to the show to perform his current single, “Never Gonna Let You Go.”

On July 16, Lucca released With the Whole World Watching via mentor and former Voice coach, Adam Levine’s 222 Records. Nearly two weeks later he kicked off the With the Whole World Watching tour in Spring Lake, MI, and went on to open for Maroon 5 and Kelly Clarkson in September as part of their latest tour.

Lucca’s career in show business has spanned more than 20 years and includes eight albums. He got his start as a cast member for Disney’s Mickey Mouse Club (1991-95). For more information, go to http://www.tonylucca.com.

AAPL: Apple earnings fall despite strong iPhone sales - Christian Science Monitor

Apple (AAPL) quarterly earnings are still sagging even as sales of its iPhones are rising. The fiscal fourth-quarter results announced Monday closed the books on a sobering year that saw Apple's market value plunge by about $160 billion.

Apple's quarterly earnings are still sagging even as sales of its iPhones are rising, a vexing phenomenon feeding investor worries about whether stiffer competition in the mobile device market will continue to undercut the company's prosperity.

The fiscal fourth-quarter results announced Monday closed the books on a sobering year that saw Apple's market value plunge by about 25 percent, or about $160 billion. Apple Inc. remains the world's most valuable company, despite the downturn.

The company's earnings have been shrinking along with its share of the smartphone and tablet computer market that Apple reshaped with the 2007 release of the first iPhone and the 2010 introduction of the iPad. Apple hasn't come up with another breakthrough product in a new category since then, raising questions about the company's ability to innovate following the death of co-founder and chief visionary Steve Jobs two years ago.

Apple's earnings have now fallen from the previous year in three consecutive quarters after a decade of steady growth.

The Cupertino, Calif., earned $7.5 billion, or $8.26 per share, during the three months ending Sept. 28. That compared to income of $8.2 billion, or $8.67 per share, last year.

The latest quarterly earnings topped the average estimate of $7.92 per share among analysts polled by FactSet.

Revenue rose 4 percent to $37.5 billion — about $600 million above analyst predictions.

Investors were evidently hoping for a better showing and, perhaps, a more optimistic forecast for the current quarter, which covers the crucial holiday shopping season. Management predicted Apple's revenue will range from $55 billion to $58 billion in the quarter ending in late December. Analysts had projected revenue of $55.6 billion. Apple also indicated that its profit margins would be in the same range as the past quarter.

Apple's stock dipped $6.45, or about 1.2 percent, to $523.43 in extended trading after the numbers came out.

Activist investor Carl Icahn, who holds a 0.5 percent stake in Apple, is pressuring the company to spend $150 billion buying back its own stock in an effort to boost the price. His idea would more than double the $60 billion that Apple's board has budgeted for buying back stock during the next three years.

Apple apparently doesn't have any immediate plans to placate Icahn. CEO Tim Cook told analysts on a Monday conference call that the board won't announce any potential changes to its current program for buying back stock until early next year.

The latest quarter included early sales of the latest iPhones released last month.

The models consist of a 5S, a high-end version featuring a faster chip and a fingerprint reader, and the 5C, a slightly cheaper version that comes in a variety of brightly colored plastic cases. Apple didn't specify how many of each of the new models sold during the final week of the quarter.

The company sold 33.8 million iPhones in the past quarter, a 26 percent increase from the same time last year. But the prices for those iPhones averaged $577, a 7 percent decrease from an average price of $618 a year ago.

Apple's iPad sales edged slightly upward, with 14.1 million of the devices sold versus 14 million a year ago. The average price for an iPad slipped 14 percent to $439, a shift reflecting the growing popularity of a smaller version featuring an 8-inch display screen.

An update to the iPad Mini with a higher definition display screen and a higher price is scheduled to go on sale at a still-to-be determined date next month. At the same time, Apple is cutting the price of the original iPad Mini by $30 to $299. A thinner and lighter version of the full-sized iPad, called Air, will go on sale Friday.
