Tim Tebow weighs in on his hire at ESPN, his NFL future; more - CNN

Tim Tebow will make his ESPN debut during the network's coverage of the BCS title game on Jan. 6.

David Bergman/SI

ESPN held a conference call on Tuesday with new employee Tim Tebow, a media session that lasted 25 minutes and 18 seconds, or approximately 5,000 fewer hours than the network has spoken about Tebow over the past two years. The network announced on Monday that it had formally reached an agreement with Tebow to serve as a college football analyst for the upcoming SEC Network. Tebow's primary role will be as an analyst for SEC Nation, a Saturday morning pregame show that will travel to different SEC campuses each week. In the months leading up to the launch of SEC Nation on Aug. 28, ESPN said Tebow will also contribute to a variety of ESPN platforms, including SportsCenter, ESPN Radio and the network's Heisman Trophy coverage. The former Florida quarterback will make his debut during coverage of the BCS title game on Jan. 6.

For those seeking an instant broadcasting take, Tebow is a super-nice kid, stays on script like Daniel Day-Lewis and will not be a critical analyst in any shape or form, at least not initially. Some highlights from the conference call:

On his future as a professional quarterback: "I know I have said this quote a lot: I don't know what the future holds, but I know who holds my future. I'm not sure what's ahead of me. I'm very excited to have this opportunity at ESPN, and who knows what the next few months will hold? I'll continue train to be the best quarterback that I can be. I have been training very hard over the course of the last few months, five days a week and I feel like I'm the best that I've ever been as a quarterback right now and I hope I get the opportunity to show that. But I'm also looking forward to being a part of SEC Nation and being a part of ESPN."

On whether his work with ESPN will impact his training to play quarterback: "Well, I don't think it will impact my training. Right now I'll only be doing one game and that's the national championship (Jan. 6) and then I'll have a little time off. So I don't think I will get too out of shape just by one game."

On why he wanted this job: "Because of our great relationship. [ESPN has] been so generous to let me pursue my dream of being an NFL quarterback. And I will continue to push myself to become better every single day, not only as a quarterback, but also an analyst. If I get the opportunity to continue to play quarterback in the NFL, I would love to do so. But I also want to be the best analyst I can be for many years to come. I'm thankful for that partnership and, you know, it felt like right now was a great opportunity to start."

On whether he can be objective as an analyst: "I would love to continue to be someone that is positive but also be someone that is objective. I have never had a hard time saying what I believe or standing up for something and hopefully I can continue to be that same person as an analyst and sharing what I believe about players, about teams, about games. I will look at it from an objective prism and try to share an insight with the viewers just like I always have any time I have had the opportunity to share."

On whether he was surprised that an NFL team did not give him a call this year: "For me, I try not to worry about what I can't control. I know I've said that statement a lot but it's very true. I just tried to focus on becoming a better quarterback, becoming a better athlete and being ready for whenever an opportunity if a team gave me a call."

On why he chose ESPN over another playing in another league such as the CFL: "This is an awesome opportunity for me because it is the start of something -- it is the start of SEC Nation and it is fun to be at the ground level of something when it is being built and to try to help something grow from the bottom up. That is what we are trying to do and I'm excited to be a part of it."

Stephanie Druley, ESPN vice president of production for college networks, on why Tebow was hired: "When you look for an analyst, you look for someone who can provide unique perspective and give their opinion through the prism of their own experience and I don't think anyone has had a more unique experience than Tim Tebow, especially in the SEC. So I expect him to be a new voice, an exciting voice and a different perspective than we have heard before. ... Tim is a very nice person, as we all know, and the role model that he is. But he's also a football junkie. He lives, eats and breathes the game. That is what you look for as an analyst. The best analysts teach the viewers about the game. I think Tim will do an excellent job with that. I'm confident he'll give opinions where it needs to be given. As criticism is warranted, I think he'll give criticism. I think that criticism will be educated and well thought out."

Justin Connolly, ESPN senior vice president of programming for college networks, on what happens if an NFL team calls Tebow next fall: "It was important for Tim that he had the ability to pursue his interests in becoming an NFL quarterback and that is something we were certainly willing to include as part of bringing him aboard this team. In terms of specific situations, I don't want get ahead of ourselves and comment on any particular eventuality or scenario you can put together. But that is a key piece of this relationship and we will honor that perspective."

Dwyane Wade: Yes, I'm the daddy (though my fiancee's not the mom) - Los Angeles Times

Dwyane Wade has confirmed the reports: He's the daddy of a baby boy whose mother isn't his new fiancee Gabrielle Union.

"I had a time, a part in our break, in our pain and our hurt, a blessing came out of it in my life, having a son that was born healthy," Wade, 31, said during a news conference Monday in Denver.

The "break" he referred to was one with actress Union, 41, whom he's been dating since 2009 but separated from briefly when her career and his injuries took them in different directions.

The boy, Wade's third son, was born on Nov. 10 in Los Angeles, according to TMZ, which obtained the birth certificate. Xavier Zechariah Wade's mom is one Aja Metoyer, 31.

"I've always tried to show my importance in my kids' lives and it doesn't change now," the Miami Heat star said, according to the Sun Sentinel, which covered the news conference. "So, I, my lady and my family have continued to move forward, and I think that's evident with the ring and the proposal that I gave her."

Union was said to have been initially angry about the news, a source told E! Online on Monday, but the two worked it out.

Wade is already raising two sons, Zaire and Zion Wade, from his marriage to Siohvaughn Funches, from whom he split in 2007. Their acrimonious divorce was finalized in 2010.

No word on who will be raising Xavier, though it appears to be Metoyer, who has two other kids, according to TMZ. Sources told the website that Wade — who is not listed on the birth certificate as the father, though the child has his name — has visited his new son several times already.

What the hell is a 'quenelle'? Why everyone is searching Google for an anti ... - Haaretz (blog)

It’s a word that most of us had never heard until this week. Quenelle: a word that sounds like it could be a sophisticated French pastry or obscure breed of exotic bird, or perhaps the latest bizarre celebrity name for a child.

On Monday, it was the third-most-searched-for term on Google.

As those who did not spend their winter holidays unplugged and are up on the latest online scandals know by now, a quenelle is a gesture that is getting a whole lot of famous people into a lot of trouble. At first glance, it looked innocent enough, and it was hard to see what all the fuss was about. To American eyes, it looks like someone with bad aim is trying to strike the pose of the pledge of allegiance with one hand, while the other arm is somehow paralyzed.

Unfortunately, that’s far from the true meaning.

The word began its journey to becoming infamous last Saturday when a French soccer star Nicolas Anelka who plays for the British team West Bromwich Albion made the gesture in celebration of a goal at a game - and an outcry ensued. He claims that it is merely an ‘anti-establishment’ gesture popularized by his comedian friend. Others disagreed sharply. On the same day Valerie Fourneyron, France's sports minister tweeted: "Anelka's gesture is a shocking, disgusting provocation. No place for anti-Semitism and incitement to hatred on the football field." A host of other leaders and Jewish groups also protested strongly against the gesture, even asking that Anelka be banned from the field for making a salute “created by a well-known extreme anti-Semite who has displayed his hatred of Jews, mocked the Holocaust and Jewish suffering."

And so thousands of us turned to Google in an attempt to figure out exactly what was going on. How bad was this bizarre gesture? Is it merely a rebellious version of the international sign for F--- Y--? Or indeed a subtle way to give a “Heil Hitler” without getting in trouble? This explanation just seemed so illogical. Why would celebrities of African origin embrace a Nazi salute? Do they not understand that Hitler was no fan of dark-skinned folks?

The BBC went with this definition:

“It is the trademark of the hugely controversial French comedian Dieudonne M'Bala M'Bala, who once said he would like to put a quenelle - a rugby-ball-shaped serving of fish or meat paste - up the backside of Zionists.”
(I read this and thought - Aha - fish or meat paste! I knew it sounded like some kind of food group!)

The BBC continued: “Dieudonne made the gesture when he headed his own anti-Zionist campaign in the European elections in 2009. French media trace it further back, to one of his performances in 2005. It came to greater prominence in September when two soldiers were photographed appearing to make the gesture outside a Paris synagogue. There are thousands of examples posted online, some at sensitive sites such as the Auschwitz death camp, and Dieudonne fans can be seen repeating it outside his theatre.”

Not satisfied with one source, I went to the ultimate authority of our time - Wikipedia. There were two listings for “quenelle.” Their description of the dish known as “quenelle” was slightly more appetizing than that of the BBC - “a mixture of creamed fish, chicken, or meat, sometimes combined with breadcrumbs, with a light egg binding...The word quenelle is derived from the German Knödel (noodle or dumpling).Quenelle may also refer to a food item made into an oval or egg shape, such as ice cream, sorbet, or mashed potato quenelles.”
The Wikipedia description of the quenelle gesture was harder to stomach: “a gesture which is performed by pointing one arm diagonally downwards, while touching that arm's shoulder with the opposite hand. French political activist and comedian Dieudonné M'bala M'bala is credited with creating and popularizing the gesture, which he first used publicly in 2009 while campaigning as a candi date for the 2009 European Parliament elections at the head of an "anti-Zionist" list.

While Dieudonné says the quenelle is "an anti-establishment gesture," it takes the appearance of a Nazi salute in reverse, and critics describe it as an expression of anti semitism. In France, displaying Nazi symbols is illegal if done to cause offense, and the quenelle is viewed by some as an underhanded manner of expressing hatred for Jews without inviting legal prosecution. The negative intent of the gesture, they say, is further underlined by Dieudonné's history of anti-Semitic remarks and racial hatred convictions. The location of a number of photographed quenelle salutes in front of prominent Holocaust landmarks and Jewish institutions further suggests the prejudicial nature of the gesture.”

According to an expert interviewed in the French newspaper Liberation and cited widely, Jean-Yves Camus, the quenelle salute has become the focus of a “broad movement that is anti-system and prone to conspiracy theories, but which has anti-Semitism as its backbone”with a “conviction is that there is a world order dominated by Washington and Tel Aviv,” he said. “Behind speeches that are critical of NATO and global finance, and supportive of [Syrian President] Bashar Assad and [late Venezuelan president] Hugo Chavez, there is the underlying conviction that it is the Jews who are pulling all the strings.

Presumably, the sense that they are rebelling against some grand conspiracy against the evil Zionist world order - that they are ‘sticking it to the man’ is what puts that mischievous little twinkle in the eyes of those making the “upside-down” Nazi salute in selfies online.

After turning Europe upside down, the quenelle controversy rapidly spread to the U.S., when basketball star Tony Parker, who has been accused of making the gesture and thus “mainstreaming anti-Semitic hate.” He has since apologized.

Even the President of the United States has gotten dragged into the mess. In an effort to minimize the gesture, Anelka also tweeted a picture of President Obama making a similar gesture (which turned out to be baseless with proof that Obama’s action was instead a move associated with a hip-hop song by Jay-Z.)

The more we learn about Dieudonne, the comedian who started it all increasingly sounds like a really fun guy. Even as the quenelle-on-the-soccer-field swirled across the globe, he was getting into yet more hot water, with news breaking that he may be tried for racial incitement for the eighth time with the opening of a criminal investigation regarding possible suspicion of incitement to racial hatred after he made a remark hinting it was a shame that a Jewish journalist doing a story on him didn’t end up in a gas chamber.

If that’s not bad enough, it looks like Dieudonne is hoping to make a profit off all this publicity. The TV station France 24 tells us that he has “been working on launching a range of quenelle-related merchandise and in October 2013 his wife registered the quenelle as a trademark with the French National Industrial Property Institute.”

T-shirts? Coffee mugs? Whether or not racism turns a profit, it seems that in the near future, nobody will have to Google the word anymore.

Hackers target pro gamer after taking 'League of Legends' offline - NBCNews.com

hacking

"League of Legends" was among the games and gaming-related websites that were targeted on Monday by the hacker group DERP.

"League of Legends" was among the games and gaming-related websites that were targeted on Monday by the hacker group DERP.

A group of hackers claiming credit for knocking popular online game "League of Legends" offline Monday said they did it for "the lulz" — but things turned personal against a popular professional gamer after he shared his observations about the outages with his 367,000 followers on Twitch.tv — a video-streaming platform where gamers broadcast their gameplay in real time.

DERP, the hacker group claiming credit on Twitter for the deliberate denial-of-service attack on "League of Legends," and other games, reportedly posted Varga's personal information online, including his home address. As well as turning their attention to taking down games featured on the 25-year-old gamer's Twitch.tv channel, DERP allegedly made a false call to the police. Varga, 25, best known under the gamer monikur, "PhantomL0rd," ended up in handcuffs

"League of Legends" (LoL) is easily the most popular game on Twitch today — a spokesperson for the company told NBC News in July that LoL videos rack up more than 450 million views in a given month.

"League of Legends" players had begun to identify server outages across the U.S. and European versions of games early Monday morning. Later that day, the game's Asians servers were knocked offline as well.

Riot Games, the creator of "League of Legends," confirmed that the outages were due to an outside hacker Monday evening in a statement issued on the company's Twitter account, saying that it was "investigating the issue."

It's unclear if there was any other reason DERP reportedly targeted Vargas other than his coverage of the original attacks again "League of Legends." Vargas was not immediately available for comment on this story, but during a Twitch.tv stream he did after the events subsidedm he said that his personal information was leaked after he had begun to notice server issues and communicated directly with one of the alleged hackers.

By the time the dust settled, DERP had disrupted services on popular websites such as the Electronic Arts homepage, Reddit, Blizzard's Battle.net service (which supports online gameplay for hit games like "StarCraft II," "Diablo III," and "World of Warcraft"), the social network Club Penguin, and other games like "Quake Live" and "Dota 2," another popular competitive strategy game similar to "League of Legends."

"no dota for you," DERP wrote to Vargas on Twitter at one point on Monday afternoon.

"LOOOL," Vargas responded.

Pretty soon, Vargas wasn't laughing. His personal information hit the Internet and a prank phone call was then placed to the local police department alleging that Vargas was holding hostages in his house.

"Just had an automatic pointed at me, put in hand cuffs and sat in the back of a cop car as I watched as 6 policemen go through my whole house," Vargas posted on Facebook Monday afternoon. "Will keep you all updated." Vargas posted a picture of what he described as the arresting police officers on his Facebook page, and as well as several other images of his alleged arrest during his Twitch stream on Monday, but the Los Angeles Police Department hasn't provided any information to the press yet.

Vargas said he was released once it became clear that the call was a fake, but he said in an almost hour-long video he posted on YouTube that he's still rattled by Monday's events.

"I'm still quite shaken up, but I'm good. I'm okay," Vargas said in the video.

Denver Broncos' Wes Welker cleared for playoff action - NFL.com

The Denver Broncos' receiving corps will have their dynamic slot receiver back for the playoffs.

Wes Welker has been cleared to play after missing the past three games with a concussion, Broncos coach John Fox announced Monday.

Peyton Manning

Welker practiced with the Broncos last week on a limited basis after suffering his second concussion of the season in Week 14.

Welker will have an extra week to recover after Denver clinched the No. 1 overall seed in the AFC playoffs with its 34-14 win Sunday over the Oakland Raiders.

Peyton Manning didn't miss a beat the past two weeks without Welker, as the QB set gaudy NFL passing records. However, come playoff time Welker will play a big role in a potential Super Bowl run in the chilly Denver weather.

Here are the other injury news items to know Monday:

1. Green Bay Packers coach Mike McCarthy announced that linebacker Clay Matthews (thumb surgery) will miss another week. McCarthy didn't sound particularly hopeful of Matthews returning anytime soon if the Packers advance in the playoffs.

2. Running back Eddie Lacy's ankle looks "much better" this week, according to McCarthy. That's good to hear, but Lacy looked far from 100 percent in Green Bay's win over Chicago. McCarthy said he was happy the Packers were playing Sunday, not Saturday.

3. New York Giants general manager Jerry Reese said David Wilson will undergo neck surgery in the offseason and should be able to play in 2014.

4. Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Dwayne Bowe (concussion) will practice Tuesday. It looks like he'll play on Saturday against the Indianapolis Colts.

5. The Seattle Seahawks say wide receiver Percy Harvin (hip) plans to practice this week, which is a surprise. Coach Pete Carroll said last week Harvin could be headed for injured reserve.

6. MRI results for Brian Hartline confirm the Miami Dolphins receiver has a PCL tear. The Miami Herald reports he won't need surgery and will be ready for training camp.

7. Vontae Davis gave the Colts a scare, leaving Sunday's win over the Jaguars early with a groin injury. Monday's MRI results on the cornerback came back negative, the team announced.

OAKLAND, Calif. -- The Broncos are the No. 1 seed in the AFC.

Their first game will come in the Divisional Round of the playoffs, and their opponent will be the lowest seed remaining between the fourth, fifth and sixth seeds.

This year, that means Denver will face the winner of the game between No. 4 Indianapolis Colts and the No. 5 Kansas City Chiefs, or the No. 6 seed San Diego Chargers if they upset the No. 3 seed Cincinnati Bengals.

The Broncos have played all three of those teams this year, going 3-2 in those games. Two of Denver's three losses in the regular season came at the hands of the Colts and Chargers.

The Chiefs-Colts matchup in the Wild Card Round is a rematch of a Week 16 tilt between the two clubs, when Indianapolis won at Arrowhead Stadium.

It would be just the second time the Broncos and Chiefs have ever met in the postseason -- the first meeting was a 14-10 Broncos victory in the Divisional Round following the 1997 season en route to a Super Bowl XXXII championship.

If the Colts are the opponent, it would be the third playoff matchup between the two squads. In both 2003 and 2004, the Broncos lost in the Wild Card Round to Peyton Manning-led Indianapolis.

Denver and San Diego have never squared off in the postseason.

"You’ve got to be ready to go," cornerback Champ Bailey said, "because whoever you face is going to be a really good football team.”

The game will take place on Sunday, January 12 at 2:40 p.m. MST.

Spurs' Tony Parker apologizes for using controversial 'quenelle' salute in photo - SI.com

Posted December 30, 2013

Spurs guard Tony Parker apologized Monday after he drew criticism for a photograph depicting him flashing the “quenelle” gesture, a French hand signal that is said to represent a reverse Nazi salute.

The five-time All-Star and longtime French basketball captain said in the statement that he was unaware of the gesture’s anti-Semitic implications when he was photographed doing the “quenelle” alongside controversial French comedian Dieudonné M’bala M’bala, who has been prosecuted and convicted on multiple occasions for anti-Semitic remarks in France.

“While this gesture has been part of French culture for many years, it was not until recently that I learned of the very negative concerns associated with it,” Parker said in the statement, which was released by the Spurs. “When l was photographed making that gesture three years ago, I thought it was part of a comedy act and did not know that it could be in any way offensive or harmful.”

The “quenelle” is executed by holding one arm straight and bringing the hand of the other arm to that shoulder, as shown below. The Daily Mail reports that Dieudonné has portrayed the “quenelle” as an “anti-establishment gesture.”

(@martin76130)

Tony Parker (right) does the “quenelle” in a controversial photo. (@martin76130)

Earlier Monday, the Simon Wiesenthal Center included Parker on its “Top 10 Anti-Semitic/Anti-Israel Slurs List” and called on him to apologize for the photograph.

“The Simon Wiesenthal Center is urging NBA star Tony Parker to apologize for using the Nazi-like Quenelle introduced by anti-Semitic French comedian, Dieudonné,” a statement from the international Jewish human rights organization read. “The salute has been denounced by French authorities and leaders of the French Jewish community. It is now widely used by neo-Nazis; far-right leader Jean-Marie Le Pen posed using it. Another prominent French sports figure, French soccer star, Nicolas Anelka, flashed the salute during a game in England in late December.”

Parker distanced himself from the “quenelle” and said he hoped his experience could serve as a teachable moment.

“Since I have been made aware of the seriousness of this gesture, I will certainly never repeat the gesture and sincerely apologize for any misunderstanding or harm relating to my actions,” he said in the statement. “Hopefully this incident will serve to educate others that we need to be more aware that things that may seem innocuous can actually have a history of hate and hurt.”

Sky.com reports that Anelka, a West Bromwich Albion striker who flashed the “quenelle” during a game against West Ham on Sunday, will discontinue the goal celebration in light of the controversy.

“Nicolas said that he performed the gesture to dedicate his goal to a friend [Dieudonné] and vehemently denied having any intention to cause offense,” West Bromwich Albion said in a statement.

The NBA has not yet issued a statement in response to the photograph or the controversy.

The Spurs will host the Nets in San Antonio on Tuesday.

New Orleans Saints 2014 opponents - NewOrleansSaints.com

The New Orleans Saints will face teams from the AFC North and NFC North in 2014, the NFL announced Monday.

Along with the NFC South, AFC North and NFC North, the Saints will battle the Dallas Cowboys and San Francisco 49ers in 2014.

New Orleans Saints 2014 opponents:

Home: Baltimore Ravens, Cincinnati Bengals, Green Bay Packers, Minnesota Vikings, San Francisco 49ers, Atlanta Falcons, Carolina Panthers and Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Away: Chicago Bears, Cleveland Browns, Detroit Lions, Pittsburgh Steelers, Dallas Cowboys, Atlanta Falcons, Carolina Panthers and Tampa Bay Buccaneers

The scheduling formula implemented in 2002 with realignment guarantees that all teams play each other on a regular, rotating basis.

Under the formula, every team plays 16 games as follows:

*Home and away against its three division opponents (6 games).

*The four teams from another division within its conference on a rotating three-year cycle (4 games).

*The four teams from a division in the other conference on a rotating four-year cycle (4 games).

*Two intraconference games based on the prior year’s standings (2 games). These games match a first-place team against the first-place teams in the two same-conference divisions the team is not scheduled to play that season. The second-place, third-place, and fourth-place teams in a conference are matched in the same way each year.

Beginning in 2010, a change was made to how teams are paired in the schedule rotation to ensure that teams playing the AFC and NFC West divisions would not be required to make two west coast trips (e.g. at San Francisco and at Seattle), while other teams in their division had none (e.g. at St. Louis and at Arizona).

The official 2014 schedule, with playing dates and times, will be announced in the spring.

NFL Kickoff 2014 Weekend will begin on Thursday night, Sept. 4, and the regular season will conclude on Dec. 28.

Super Bowl XLIX at University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, Arizona will be played on Sunday, Feb. 1, 2015.

Is Sharkeisha Dead? Death Hoax Sparks Internet After Fake Photo Is Posted To ... - International Business Times

The Internet community began to wonder if Sharkeisha, the Houston teen who now infamously sucker-punched classmate Shamichael Manuel, had died. The rumor has been determined to be false, as reported by The Hollywood Gossip, and started with the Twitter handle @LilButtSHAR and spread further after a Huzler.com article.

On Twitter, a user claimed to be Sharkeisha, after the video posted on World Star Hip Hop went viral, and on Friday, “she” sent the social-media site into a tizzy after posting a photo of an injured woman lying in a hospital bed. The Twitter user claimed it was Sharkeisha.

The person in the picture has her leg in a brace and is handcuffed to the hospital bed. @LilButtShar, whose name is posted as “Queen Sharkeisha,” posted the image on Dec. 27, along with the following message: “2 shots, 12 stitches and still breathing. THANK YOU LORD. #PrayForSharkeisha.” It was retweeted nearly 3,000 times and favorited more than 1,000.

The user seemingly tried to bring attention to the @LilButtSHAR page by retweeting anyone who used the hashtag #PrayForSharkeisha. It seemed to have worked, because it wasn’t long before users began to scramble to the Internet to figure out whether or not the infamous puncher had died from her hoax injuries, especially after this message was posted by “Queen Sharkeisha:” “We, The Thompson family, wishes to thank everyone for their condolences and prayers in this time of need for Sharkeisha. This's appreciated.”

The rumor seems to have gone from wounded to dead when Huzlers.com reported Sharkeisha had passed away after a fatal drive-by shooting. “Sharkeisha Thompson was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at a Fifth Ward hospital early Friday at about 3:30 am,” the site wrote. Huzlers.com, however, is apparently a comedy site.

The Hollywood Gossip noted the picture was not of Sharkeisha, but instead was of Karen Brim, 42, who once appeared in a New York Post article.

Reports: Former Formula One champ Michael Schumacher in “critical” condition - CBS News

LYON, France - Retired seven-times Formula One world champion Michael Schumacher is in "critical" condition following a fall while skiing off-piste in the French Alps resort of Meribel.

The 44-year-old German was taken to hospital in Grenoble in a coma following the accident, and placed under the care of Professor Gerard Saillant, a brain and spine injury expert.

Schumacher was wearing a helmet a helmet at the time of the accident, the resort director, Christophe Gernigon-Lecomte, told Reuters.

The hospital in Grenoble released a statement later Sunday saying he had "suffered a serious head trauma and arrived in a coma, making it necessary for him to undergo a neurosurgical procedure."

Schumacher's spokeswoman Sabine Kehm was unable to give any further information about his condition but confirmed he was on a private ski trip and had not been alone.

Gernigon-Lecomte said Schumacher, who has a vacation home in Meribel, had been skiing in backcountry, which usually means along unmarked trails.

"He fell around 11:00 am and hit a rock with his head," he added.

Schumacher, whose birthday is on Jan. 3, is the most successful Formula One driver of all time with a record 91 victories among his achievements. He won his titles with Benetton and Ferrari.

He left the sport last year after a three-year comeback with Mercedes following an earlier retirement from Ferrari at the end of 2006. The German lives in Switzerland with his wife and two children.

Paul Walker Faked His Death: Atrocious Rumor Causes Uproar In Twitter - International Business Times AU

While the family of Paul Walker has apparently  been  wrecked up by the untimely and tragic demise of late "Fast & Furious" star, a thoughtless hoax rumor that Walker "faked" his death has been circulating on social media. The heartless hoax originated from a Web site called Nosinfo.com, saying the late actor and crew of "Fast & Furious" planned the so-called death hoax. This exasperated the late star's followers and the angry outburst is expressed in Twitter.

The Web site headline read: "Paul Walker Girlfriend Busted On-Site Setting Up Fake Death."

"Paul Walker didn't die. Nor did Roger Rodas. They are both alive and well, and their relatives well know it," "Paul Walker Girlfriend Busted On-Site Setting Up Fake Death," the article continued.

Nodisinfo even provides  pictorial evidence that Walker and Rodas never died.

"It has already been established that the relatives of Paul Walker are involved in a cover-up that is the cover-up of faking the actor's death. It has been proven beyond a shadow of a doubt, here, that the accident is a fabrication and that there wasn't any real car crash. Rather, what is seen is imagery of a man-made car fire and a car pre-placed in position to be incinerated: without either Walker or Rodas inside," the site noted.

The site claimed that Jasmine Pilchard-Gosnell is also a part of the fake death plan. However, we know she was utterly distressed by the news of her boyfriend's death.

"I got a phone call from him and he said it didn't look good, that from the looks Paul and Roger didn't make it. Paul's girlfriend was standing next to me when I got the phone call. When I told her what happened she fell, she collapsed," Jim Thorp told HollywoodLife.com exclusively.

These bogus and awfully thoughtless reports are causing uproar in Twitter. We have compiled a list of tweets from the Walker's fans blasting the site for fake news.

One username domdamotta wrote: "Paul Walker didn't fake his death let him rest in peace."

Another username meccistimecca posted: "Nosinfo.com is uncivilized and insensitive by reporting fake news Paul Walker faked his death. May God forgive them. Amen."

Rapper Doe B. shot dead Saturday in Montgomery, Ala. - New York Daily News

A young rapper that was a member of T.I.'s Grand Hustle was killed in a shooting at a bar in Montgomery, Ala., Saturday morning.

Doe B, born Glenn Thomas, and Kimberle Johnson, 21, also of Montgomery, died after gunfire erupted at the bar around 1 a.m., police said.

The 22-year-old rapper signed with superstar T.I.'s, Grand Hustle label just this summer.

"RIP to my lil brother Doe B. We gon miss u," the rapper tweeted early Saturday morning. "U'll never be forgotten & U WILL NOT DIE IN VAIN. We Love U champ. Always."

Thomas was rushed to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead, police said. Cops are still investigating the incident and had yet to release further details Sunday.

Six other people were wounded by gunfire and are in stable condition.

The tragedy could have been prevented — but security guards failed to checked for weapons.

Centennial Bar and Grill owner Nicole Bankhead told the Montgomery Advertiser that standard procedure is to check all patrons for firearms on entry. There are signs at the establishment's entrances that says all weapons are banned from the premises, she added.

The bar and the surrounding area have had multiple shootings in the past seven years, the newspaper reported.

Bankhead said she does not plan to reopen the business, which was closed by police after the shooting.

Mayor Todd Strange said there is "clear evidence that continued operation of this establishment poses an imminent threat to the public's safety," in a statement.

DJ Frank White of Montgomery, who managed Doe B.'s career, said the entertainer wasn't performing at the time of the incident.

The musician wore an eye patch due to being shot in the eye several years ago. He drew a lot of attention this summer after releasing his “Baby Je$us” mixtape.

Thomas had two young children and a third on the way, White said.

The other victim, Johnson, was a junior at Troy University majoring in social work, according to a statement from the school.

Garth Brooks on 2014 Plans: 'The Biggest Thing I've Ever Tried' - Taste of Country

Garth BrooksMichael Loccisano, Getty Images

Garth Brooks has something under his cowboy hat and up his sleeve regarding new music in 2014. Exactly what he is planning remains a bit of a mystery, intentionally so. He did say that something he may do between now and fall 2014 is the biggest thing he’s ever attempted!

New music from the country star remains a bit of an iffy situation. One of the obstacles is the fact that he won’t budge on his position regarding iTunes. The digital service sells individual songs, while Brooks wants his albums sold as is, not in piecemeal fashion.

Since both sides are at a gentlemanly standoff, the fate of Brooks’ future music remains up in the air, for a multitude of reasons, with digital distribution being a key factor and something he wants to settle.

Brooks called new material from a “forthcoming era.” He didn’t say much else, other than to comment on his concerns over how to get music to people on a digital level.

He further explained, “Right now there are a lot of hurdles to climb, one of which is digital. We don’t have a digital partner right now. I’ll never have a digital partner in iTunes as long as they keep the same rules they have now. I respect them; they’re friends of mine. They show me respect. They make me believe they’re friends of mine. But if they’re not going to change their ways, I’m not going to change mine. We have to figure out how we get new music to the people.”

That’s the conundrum. Hopefully they can figure it out.

But that’s not all. About this big thing he wants to attempt? It’s shrouded in mystery.

A tour is planned for next fall, with the possibility of a new project happening before then. Brooks set the table, suggesting this other thing could be huge.

“There is something that could be happening between now and the tour that might be the biggest thing I’ve ever tried to take on,” he hinted. “I’m excited. If it comes to fruition, and it looks like it’s going to, it will be the biggest thing I’ve ever tried to attempt. I’m really excited about it. It’ll be done right, it’ll be done quality. I’m in love with the idea and we just have to see if it’s going to happen. We’ll know within the next four weeks or so.”

We’ll be waiting with bated breath to find out more about this biggest thing he’s ever attempted. It’s thrilling to wait and wonder.

Red Lobster Is Dying, but It's Not Dead - Motley Fool

This is the way rumors start -- and end -- and start again.

LA Weekly ran a blog post about the trials and tribulations at Red Lobster. Parent company Darden Restaurants (NYSE: DRI  ) has been struggling to draw guests and shake negative comps at the country's largest seafood restaurant, and it announced plans to either sell of spin off the concept by the middle of next year.

Unfortunately for LA Weekly's Squid Ink blog column, the entry describing the news originally had an unfortunate headline suggesting that Red Lobster was closing. In this world of social media, it was too easy for folks to take the headline without reading the contents of an article and begin spreading it virally. Before you know it, "Red Lobster closing" started trending. LA Weekly eventually edited its headline for accuracy, but the damage was done. Darden even took to Twitter to clear its own name.

That's nice, but what if LA Weekly's post wasn't wrong as much as it was just early? How sure can we be that Red Lobster will be able to find a buyer or be financially feasible as a spinoff? For starters, Darden has closed chains before. It shuttered the 51-unit China Coast chain in 1995. Red Lobster is much larger at 705 restaurants, but what happens if Darden can't turn around the chain's waning popularity?

Things are pretty bad at Red Lobster. Comps have fallen 4.5% and 5.2% in the past two quarters. Red Lobster has been increasing prices over the past year, so its actual popularity is declining even faster. Store traffic declined 7.3% last month, and there was a 9.9% plunge in October. Red Lobster revamped its menu 14 months ago -- adding new non-seafood dishes to appeal to landlubbers -- but it didn't work.

Darden's been able to use even a meandering Red Lobster as a cash cow, taking its cash flow and throwing it at smaller and more promising concepts. However, that naturally ends if Red Lobster is sold or spun off. In other words, Red Lobster has outlived its usefulness to Darden. Why else would Darden be dropping it as bait in the water to reel in a suitor? Why would it spin off a chain that is no longer a growth vehicle -- there's one less restaurant now than there was a year ago -- to investors beyond making the remaining assets look better?

Red Lobster's dwindling bottom-line performance is a big reason profitability is plunging at Darden. Why would someone else want to buy it? Private equity firms don't have a problem taking chances, but we've seen what happens to concepts once they start to fade. As big as Steak and Ale, Bennigan's, or Howard Johnson's were, good luck finding one today.

Red Lobster is still alive, but it's not well. Anyone thinking there will be 705 or more Red Lobsters across North America in three to five years hasn't learned enough from history -- or from Darden.

Red Lobster isn't the only fading retail icon out there

Sharkeisha Dead? Drive-By Shooting Report Spreads on Twitter, Debunked as ... - The Hollywood Gossip

The rumored death of Sharkeisha, a Houston teen who punched and beat a classmate senseless in a video that went viral last month, was trending last night.

Not unlike allegations that Paul Walker faked his death, which also stemmed from bogus online sources, it appears to be a hoax. Sharkeisha is alive and well.

Or at least alive. She's not well in the head, clearly.

Sharkeisha Video

The Twitter account “Queen Sharkeisha,” claiming to be the infamous video attacker, alleged that she had been gunned down in a drive-by shooting.

The account posted a photo of a young woman in the hospital.

The photo used was not Sharkeisha, however, and was actually from an old New York Post article about a 42-year-old named Karen Brim (see below).

A comedy site, Huzlers (dot) com also posted the story about her being shot before the aforementioned Tweet. It's unclear if the two acts were coordinated.

In any case, the Twitter user claiming to be Sharkeisha wrote alongside the unrelated photo: “2 shots, 12 stitches and still breathing. THANK YOU LORD."

There was no actual media coverage of the incident, but the story spread, and the terms “RIP Sharkiesha” and “Prayforsharkeisha” began trending on Twitter.

For no reason whatsoever. This didn't actually happen.

About an hour later, the account wrote to its 41,000 followers: “I am forever The Queen,” while re-tweeting a number of messages saying "she" was shot.

“Sharkeisha got killed bruh? Gah damn the game [expletive] up RIP,” reads one tweet that was re-tweeted by the “Queen Sharkeisha” account.

As for Huzlers, which said “Word on the street Sharkeisha is dead… Tun tun tun…,” on Facebook, it calls itself a website “for your daily laugh.”

Whether anyone's laughing or not, it doesn't seem the least bit credible. Nor is there anything to suggest this actually happened to the troubled teen.

Last month, the video of Sharkeisha punching and beating another teen, ShaMichael Manuel (below), hit the web, generating tens of millions of views.

The viral clip spread even more quickly than this death hoax.

Incredibly, Manuel forgives her for the sucker punch heard 'round the world. So #Prayforsharkeisha indeed. Not because she was shot, but so she gets help.

Sources: Anna Gunn's shocking weight loss was related to lupus - Examiner.com

"Breaking Bad" star Anna Gunn's eye-popping recent weight loss may be related to the autoimmune disease lupus, according to new tabloid reports.

“Anna Gunn has lupus, but it’s not widely known," unnamed source told HollywoodLife. "This is why she looked heavier in 'Breaking Bad.' The steroid injections cause swelling and weight gain. It’s been a challenge for her, but she takes good care of herself as best she can."

Lupus causes facial swelling, extreme fatigue, puffiness, headaches and joint pain.

It's uncertain how reliable these claims are since HollywoodLife has a history of making outrageous, unsubstantiated allegations about celebrities.

Gunn's dramatic transformation has fueled rumors that she's suffering from the eating disorder anorexia. When asked about her weight loss in September 2013, Gunn explained that she had gained weight while filming season six of "Breaking Bad" after taking the drug cortisone.

Anna said she then quickly lost the weight after she stopped taking cortisone.

I was actually ill while I was filming the show and it affected my weight. They gave me cortisone and I puffed up and gained weight. Now I'm better, thank God."

Cortisone (or hydrocortisone) is a steroid hormone typically used to treat gland and hormone disorders, arthritis, lupus, skin diseases, allergies, and asthma. Weight gain is a known side effect of cortisone.

The Anna Gunn lupus claims come shortly after news surfaced that Selena Gomez canceled the Asian and Australian leg of her tour because she is battling lupus.

Earlier this month, actress Kristen Johnston revealed she was diagnosed with lupus myelitis and spent two weeks being treated for the illness at the Mayo Clinic.

Johnston isn't the celebrity who has gone public about coping with lupus. In 2010, Lady Gaga revealed she tested "borderline positive" for lupus, which she manages through stress reduction, a healthy diet and rigorous workouts. Gaga said she has a genetic predisposition toward lupus, and said her aunt died from it.

In 2012, singer Toni Braxton was hospitalized for health complications related to lupus-induced blood clots. She is doing fine now.

In 2011 and again in 2012, Nick Cannon was hospitalized for kidney failure and other complications related to lupus nephritis. Cannon is now doing better after scaling back his hectic work schedule.
