‘Rising Star’ Premiere — Season 1 Recap: See Who Makes The Wall Rise
Contestants need 70% of America’s votes to make the wall rise and to get them through to the next round. Votes from the judges each count as 7%.
Kicking off the show was Joshua Peavy, 28, a youth pastor from Soperton, Georgia. He sang an emotional performance of “(Everything I Do) I Do It For You” and got 87%, including votes from all the experts! Brad joked that he sounds like he should be making moonshine but said he has a ton of heart. Kesha said it was honest, genuine and touching. Luda said he loved what he did.
Lisa Punch, 21, is originally from Guyana but now lives in Brooklyn, New York. She shares a two bedroom apartment with her 13 family members. She sang Whitney Houston and got 80% of the votes. Luda called her the total package. Brad said she should watch her pitch but loved her performance. Kesha said she had so much fun watching her performance.
Maneepat Molloy, 16, who lives in Los Angeles, Calif. just barely made it through, with 73%. Ludacris voted not to send her through. He said he didn’t feel much stage presence from her. Kesha loved it, and said stage presence can be learned.
I had high hopes for adorable real-life couple Daniel Wolfe, 24, and Olivia Thai, 25, from San Gabriel Valley, Calif. Could they be the next Alex & Sierra? Unfortunately, they got an embarrassing 6%, with no votes from the judges. Luda compared their performance to drunk karaoke. Brad said it was unpleasant but sweet. Kesha said she had a hard time saying no because she loved their energy.
Jesse Kinch, 20, is from Seaford, New York. The self proclaimed “loner” went with an old song — “I Put A Spell On You” — and rocked it with a whopping 92%, the highest score of the night! Luda said he exceded all of his expectations. Kesha said he is “kind of sexy.” Brad said he wants to hear more of his guitar skills.
Boy band Beyond 5 hails from Nashville, Tenn. The band is comprised of Zac Love, 19; Tanner Myler, 19; TJ Ryan, 16; Patch Crowe, 19; and Ammon Soloasa Tuimaualuga, 17. The guys sang “Wake Me Up.” Kesha and Brad voted yes while Luda voted no. Even so, they only got 46%.

Sarah Darling, 31, is also from Nashville, Tenn. She sang “Merry Go Round” and got 89% of votes, including yes votes from all three experts. Luda said he thinks her range is better than the song. Kesha agreed, saying she thinks Sarah has an amazing high range she didn’t show in the performance. But we will see her again!
Colin Huntley, 16, from Georgetown, Tex. sang Ed Sheeran‘s “Sing.” Although he gave it his all, he only got 38%. Kesha said he picked the wrong song. Luda said he is just too young and needs to grow a bit.
Summer Collins, 18, is from Fayetteville, North Carolina. She lost her mom to leukemia when she was just 10 years old and relied on music to help her heal. She sang “Classic” by MTKO. Kesha voted yes but Summer only got 40% total. Kesha loved her potential. Luda said her notes were off. Brad said he sees her as a successful songwriter.
Macy Kate, 17, is from St. Petersberg, Fla. She was plucked from the audience after sending in an Instagram audition tape! She thought she was just in the audience watching the show, but instead, got thrown into a rehearsal and then took the stage at the end of the night! She wowed all three judges as well as America and got 93%, the highest score of the night! Kesha was “blown away.” Luda said he can’t wait to see and hear more!
