Weather closures give Houston families unexpected extra time together - Houston Chronicle

Parents are making the best of an unexpected day off with their kids Friday as icy roads locked up Houstonians in their homes.

Local artist Basya Benshushan says today's weather was a great excuse to stay home with her two young daughters. They are catching up on crafting and cooking while others brave the roads.

"They actually love going to school," said Benshushan. "At that age hanging with friends all day is where it's at."

Gil Gredinger, a KRIV photographer, already had today off so his children's daycare being closed wasn't too much of an inconvenience. He had planned on running errands and cleaning the house. Now he'll have some tiny help.

"I don’t expect much from my two-year-old. However, my 5-year-old is expected to help a lot more," he said.

A few other parents chimed in on Facebook that their young ones would be staying with grandparents today. Others were working from home if they could.

One mother said that she and her husband work from home so a school closure was no big deal.

"My husband's company provides solutions for companies to have an 'at home' work force," said Lorena Salazar Sankey via Facebook.

"The only issue I have today is being able to open the car door since it is iced over."

Ruth Wolinsky's weekly mother's day-out group was canceled today, and she isn't holding out for a refund.

"I'm upset. I get two paltry mornings a week to get stuff done," she said on Twitter.

Just because schools are closed that doesn't mean your children should stop learning. You could always escape from the freeze at one of the many museums here in Houston.

The Houston Museum of Natural Science, The Museum of Fine Arts, The Health Museum, and the Children's Museum of Houston all reported on Friday morning that they would be open for business, with the Children's Museum of Houston opening at noon. Space Center Houston in Clear Lake will be opening their doors at noon as well.

San Jacinto Battle Monument and Museum in La Porte is closed today, which is OK, because the view from the top of the monument probably wouldn't be that inspiring in this weather. The museum is usually only closed on Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.
