Fans of Teen Mom 2 may have wondered about Leah Messer-Calvert's daughter, Aliannah, 4, and her health problems.
Now, as the MTV series has just kicked off Season 5, Leah is explaining to In Touch about her daughter's diagnosis — Aliannah has a rare form of muscular dystrophy.
"We were scared because we didn't know what her future was going to look like, but we always pushed for answers," she tells In Touch. "We never gave up, and we never will. We'll do everything we can to make sure Ali has the life that she needs."
Leah explains, "The disorder affects her respiratory system and progresses the older she gets. The bigger she gets and the more weight she gains, the harder it'll be for her muscles to carry the weight."
Though a preview for the new season shows Leah's new husband, Jeremy Calvert, 24, threatening divorce during an intense argument, Leah says, "This is his first marriage — he's still learning you can't throw that word around," she explains. "We both know we'd never get a divorce. Both of us are too happy."
And even Leah's ex-husband, Corey Simms, 24, and the father to Ali and twin sister Aleeah, has been supportive. "We have to stay strong for Ali," she says, "and things are going good."
Along with Leah's home life, in the new season of Teen Mom 2, viewers will see Jenelle Evans opt for an abortion, Chelsea Houska battle with ex-boyfriend Adam Lind and Kailyn Lowry-Marroquin get married, have a baby and become a dental assistant, according to Today.
