Carmelo Anthony's 62-point game gets the attention of LeBron James, Bernard ... - SB Nation

Noah K. Murray-USA TODAY Sports

Friday night, the Knicks star set the single-game scoring record at Madison Square Garden.

Carmelo Anthony was unbelievable on Friday night, racking up 62 points on 66 percent shooting as the New York Knicks beat the Charlotte Bobcats, 125-96, at Madison Square Garden.

Anthony had 15 made shots in the first half alone, including three three-pointers. He was seemingly unstoppable as Bobcats defenders tried everything to impede the reigning NBA scoring champion. It was no use, and at the end of the first half Anthony put in a shot from half court that exemplifed the night:

"To be honest, coming into today’s game, I just had a different type of focus," said Anthony after the win.

The crowd rained MVP chants on Anthony late, and the Knicks forward scored his final point of the evening with 7:22 left in the fourth quarter. The Knicks team record of 60 was set by Bernard King in 1984. The MSG record of 61 was previously held by Kobe Bryant.

Bernard King issued a statement through the Knicks' public relations department, saying of Anthony, "If anyone was to break my Knicks record that I have held for so long, I'm absolutely delighted that it was Carmelo."

Despite Charlotte's best effort to double-team him down the stretch, Anthony bullied his way to shots in the fourth quarter on obviously tired legs. The Bobcats' Al Jefferson, who had 25 points of his own, was beside himself after the game, "When he's in one of those zones, ain't nothing nobody can do about it."

Likewise, Twitter, Instagram and Facebook exploded with the #Melo62 hashtag with former and current players getting involved in the praise.
