With Team Avatar and Team Tenzin united and en route to the Southern Portal, "Harmonic Convergence" began by addressing the deliciously awkward kiss between Mako and Korra from the last episode. For now, it seems like Mako's tabling the issue, despite Bolin's smarmy suggestion to the contrary. ("I hate it when you listen to me.") That's probably just as well, since A) there are much bigger things going on right now, and B) judging by that decapitated training dummy, Korra wasn't looking too chatty anyway.

But enough with the lovey-dovey stuff -- let's talk action. It wasn't long before the group came up with a plan to get Korra through the portal. Only problem? The site was completely surrounded by Northern soldiers and dark spirits. Still, that didn't stop our ragtag heroes from launching a slick aerial assault on the campsite. This sequence had some rad moments too, like when Bolin started earthbending those remote explosives from Asami's plane onto the ground below. ("I wish Varrick was filming this. We could call it Nuktuk: Sky Warrior!") Sadly for Team Avatar, it only took a few dark spirits and the twins to bring 'em down.
Shortly thereafter, in true James Bond fashion, Unalaq divulged his entire plan to Korra and the others, and -- score! -- my Dark Avatar theory panned out, right down to the name. (Of course, whether that actually happens or not is a different story.) Either way, it was interesting to finally get Unalaq's take on the matter, and -- much like Amon in Book One -- I think the writers did a good job of fleshing out Unalaq's motives a bit more. For him, becoming the Dark Avatar would "even the playing field" in terms of dark and light. In that sense, it's kind of the "Anakin Skywalker" mentality (if you will), where "balance" literally means equal parts good and evil. Granted, this is a bit hokier than Amon's reasoning, but you can't deny that a yin to the Avatar's yang would be all kinds of awesome.

Meanwhile, it was great to see Bumi rocking it this week (that is, after he had so carelessly landed in a pile of snow during the first attack). I particularly enjoyed his interaction with a dark spirit, as his failed boxing match turned into a pied piper routine. The addition of Naga and Pabu made Bumi's rescue mission all the more amusing ("Reinforcements!"), not to mention Bumi using a mecha tank to demolish the entire campsite. (And it was all thanks to his trusty flute!)
Seriously, though, what's "Harmonic Convergence" without Harmonic Convergence? Suffice to say, the end of this episode went out with a real bang. That final fight sequence was pretty darn cool, with Unalaq pimping up on his flying spirit, while Korra, Mako and Bolin were bending like there was no tomorrow. (Side note, I am digging Korra's disheveled, let-down hair look.) As for the Harmonic Convergence, that global energy field was intense -- and if there was ever any doubt before, the Avatar world is apparently round, like ours. Who knew?
But even after all that, we still have two whole episodes left before Book Two is over, and if "Harmonic Convergence" was any indication, this last hour is gonna be a doozy...
