Analysis: Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers comes through for GOP in SOTU response - Washington Post

Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers (Wash.) had one of the more difficult tasks in politics, delivering the official Republican response to President Obama’s State of the Union address.

As with previous responders, she had to speak from an isolated setting — a quiet room inside the Capitol — and without the pomp and near-constant applause given to the president down the hall. Nevertheless, and to the surprise of many insiders, McMorris Rodgers largely succeeded — mixing plainspoken platitudes with tenderly told stories about her children and her blue-collar roots.

House GOP aides said her selection was driven in part by a desire to highlight Republican women, hoping to combat aggressive criticism from Democrats about the party’s approach to women’s issues.

It was all there — easygoing populism, an emphasis on jobs and her family, which includes a son with Down syndrome and a Navy veteran husband. It was as if a Republican pollster had created a politician with the exact profile that Republicans are looking to promote as they head toward this year’s midterm elections. Here was a pro-life, never-offensive woman from a Western state who grew up picking apples on a farm; a youthful, 44-year-old evangelical Christian who is known as one of the savvier social-media users in the House, uploading countless photos to Instagram and videos to Vine.

Even better, there was no awkward reaching for a water bottle, as Sen. Marco Rubio (Fla.) did repeatedly last year in his response, or the kind of clumsy articulation that caused long-lasting headaches for Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal in 2009 when he delivered the Republican response to an Obama economic speech. Instead, it was a relatively smooth delivery, as the congresswoman whisked through her scripted remarks late Tuesday on a gold couch with a folded American flag on a shelf behind her.

No drama, no problems. You could almost hear the collective breath exhaled by Republicans as they strolled through Statuary Hall, many of them watching McMorris Rodgers on their iPhones or televisions nearby. After a tumultuous year full of shutdowns and drama, Republicans cheered McMorris Rodgers’s understated manner and upbeat, check-the-box appeal.

The essence of the speech was soft outreach and balance. “I’d like to share a more hopeful Republican vision,” McMorris Rodgers said.

She criticized the president without going overboard. She talked about repealing the Affordable Care Act, but didn’t use a rhetorical hammer to make the point. On policy, she touched on economic growth and fiscal reform but never dove into the weeds, frustrating some conservative onlookers. She fulfilled the unspoken part of her duties: sound winsome and engaging, but do not make news.

“Too many people are falling further and further behind because, right now, the president’s policies are making people’s lives harder,” McMorris Rodgers said, citing her days as a McDonald’s drive-through employee as evidence of her empathy. “Republicans have plans to close the gap.”

On health care: “We’ve all talked to too many people who have received cancellation notices they didn’t expect or who can no longer see the doctors they always have,” she said. “No, we shouldn’t go back to the way things were, but the president’s health-care law is not working.”

Yet in spite of the claps from the GOP faithful, questions linger, especially this one: Why is McMorris Rodgers only now getting widespread attention and a heavyweight billing in her party after more than a year in the leadership and five terms in the House? Until Tuesday night, many Americans, outside the usual Beltway types, had never heard of her.

The answer is complicated, partly because expectations for McMorris Rodgers inside the party’s hierarchy have rarely been as high as they are this week. She’s admired and respected, but she has never been thought of as the next Nikki Haley or Susana Martinez — a possible star who could fire up a convention hall or a national ticket.

Nor has she been a major policy leader in the House in the Paul Ryan mold, building a reputation with reporters and colleagues as a wonk and legislative power broker. Rather, she is just “CMR,” as House aides have dubbed her, a low-key workhorse spokeswoman for the GOP cause, standing dutifully beside House Speaker John A. Boehner at weekly press conferences and touting the party’s Web presence.

Her ascension this week is partly due to the qualities that have kept her below the radar. In a House full of tea-party sharks, Boehner has struggled to build a trusted coterie of younger lawmakers around him. Since they first met, he has been drawn to McMorris Rodger’s no-fuss approach to internal House politics. Boehner blessed her campaign for conference vice chairman in 2008 and then for conference chairman in late 2012, when she fended off a challenge from Rep. Tom Price (Ga.), a conservative who was endorsed by Ryan (Wis.) and his allies. McMorris Rodgers’s personality also appealed to 2012 Republican Presidential nominee Mitt Romney, who trusted her to be his Capitol Hill liaison.

With her assured response on Tuesday night, that image as a friendly, iPad-toting leadership loyalist finally seems to be falling away.

Talk of a possible veep slot in 2016 is in the air, as is the possibility that McMorris Rodgers will rise through the House Republican ranks should Boehner decided to step down in the coming years. Even though she has been part of the brass for a while, it’s as if Republicans are suddenly waking up to the focus-group charm of CMR.

Here was someone with a compelling story who spoke Tuesday like a real person — a little stiff, maybe, but someone who doesn’t suffer from the usual Capitol Hill airs.

“The most important moments right now aren’t happening here. They’re not in the Oval Office or in the House chamber,” she said. “They’re in your homes: kissing your kids good night, figuring out how to pay the bills, getting ready for tomorrow’s doctor’s visit, waiting to hear from those you love serving in Afghanistan or searching for that big job interview.”

Moving forward, the challenge for McMorris Rodgers will be whether she can seize the moment and build the national profile that so far has eluded her.

She has a leadership political-action committee, which was busy last cycle raising more than $1 million for the National Republican Campaign Committee, but she doesn’t have an extensive political team. Her brother, Jeff McMorris, is probably her closest political adviser, having guided her campaigns since she first ran for the House.

It’s an open playbook for McMorris Rodgers. She has Boehner’s full support, new media interest, and remains the only woman in elected Republican leadership in Congress. With all she had to offer Tuesday for a party that is struggling to close the gender gap and rebound from back-to-back defeats in national elections, it’s a wonder she hasn’t appeared on the scene sooner.

Hundreds of Snow-Stranded Atlanta Students Finally Head Home - The Weather Channel

UPDATE 5:43 PM: The hundreds of Atlanta students who had to spend the night in their schools Tuesday thanks to the dumping of snow yesterday afternoon have now been reunited with their parents and taken home.

Some 10,000 students had been stuck in dozens of Atlanta-area schools at one point Tuesday night, a number that had dropped to roughly 2,000 by the next morning. By Wednesday afternoon, few students were still waiting for rides home, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported.

Governor Nathan Deal's office released this statement this afternoon:

"Metro Atlanta's children are home safe and sound, and I would like to thank all of the dedicated school officials, Guardsmen and law enforcement who worked through the night to reunite worried families," Deal said.

"Yesterday, I ordered the Guard to prioritize stranded school buses full of students. With Humvees, they were able to get the buses moving and deliver food and water to the students. Last night, we had at least 95 immobile buses. We had cleared them all by this morning, and that was a big task. Our next task was getting students home from school, and now we have achieved that.

"As I said this morning, my goal for the day was to get all stranded motorists moving or to a secure location by the end of the day. This afternoon, I joined law enforcement officials on an aerial inspection of our roadways, and we've seen tremendous progress with traffic moving steadily throughout the region.

"Even with this progress, work still remains. I encourage people in areas where snow and ice remain to stay off the roads, which state officials are continuing to treat. I have told state employees to not report to their offices tomorrow in an effort to limit traffic. I encourage others to do the same. With rising temperatures, we hope to return to normalcy tomorrow."

More than 100 children and 35 teachers and staff members had to spend the night in E. Rivers Elementary School in Atlanta's Buckhead neighborhood. One father walked six miles to spend the night with his 5-year-old daughter there, where the students watched movies and ate pizza from the school's cafeteria.

A group of students from Riverwood High School in Sandy Springs slept on their school bus, which had been stranded on Interstate 285 before they were taken to a nearby grocery store, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

“We’re upset because the school didn’t reach out to us to know what was going on,” said Anneqah Ferguson, the mother of an 11th-grade student. “We can’t get to them. We’re iced in. We don’t really know what the next steps are.”

Most of the several hundred students who remained stranded were in nine City of Atlanta public schools, largely across the north and western parts of the city, according to Kimberly Willis Green, a spokesperson for the city's school system.

Roughly 1,400 students were stranded Tuesday in the Marietta City Schools outside Atlanta, the AJC reported. By Wednesday morning, about 480 students remained as parents walked through the snow and ice to pick up their children.

In Cherokee County schools north of Atlanta, more than 400 students spent the night at 15 different schools across the county.

Here's the situation many school buses faced last night, captured in this Instagram video:

Parents of children at some schools resorted to walking to pick up their children themselves Tuesday afternoon, declining to wait for long-delayed school buses to make their routes home. Others met their children's buses mid-route, as they saw cars spun out on either side of the road.

The situation was a shock to many – one WSB-TV anchor called the situation "bizarre" – because the city's schools and government offices chose not to close early in advance of the storm.

Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed acknowledged the traffic travails in a press conference Wednesday morning:

"Government, schools and business[es] closing at the same time, and releasing everybody out into the city was a mistake that we all were a part of," Reid said yesterday.

Lynch Exits Media Session Again - ESPN

Updated: January 29, 2014, 5:29 PM ET

Lynch Exits Media Session Again

JERSEY CITY, N.J. -- Marshawn Lynch again lasted less than seven minutes during a mandatory Super Bowl media session, climbing over chairs to get away from reporters Wednesday morning at the Seattle Seahawks' hotel.

One day earlier, during media day at the Prudential Center in Newark, Lynch answered questions for 6½ minutes before gravitating toward the back of the fenced-off interview area. The star running back spent the rest of the Seahawks' availability that way, his eyes hidden by sunglasses and his head covered by the hood to his sweatshirt.

It was a slightly different story Wednesday, as Lynch was sporting headphones and the sunglasses were absent -- making it easier to see how uncomfortable he is with the entire process.

• SN: Lynch goes "Least Mode"

"I appreciate it," Lynch said of the media's presence and desire to speak with him. "But I just don't get it.

"I'm just here so I don't get fined."

This isn't unique to the postseason. Lynch didn't speak with reporters during the regular season and nearly drew a $50,000 fine as the Seahawks prepared for their divisional-round playoff game.

Lynch lasted 6 minutes, 47 seconds on Wednesday, climbing over chairs to exit because he was blocked in by fellow running backs Robert Turbin and Michael Robinson, who were sitting next to him at a table during an interview session conducted in cramped quarters.

Robinson was first to arrive, even calling Lynch, his good friend, to try to lure him to the interview table.

"He didn't answer," Robinson said. "He know what I'm calling for."

Lynch was next to arrive, sitting in the middle chair. After a few brief replies from Lynch, Robinson began answering questions for his friend -- using the running back's "Boss" figure of speech to end each sentence.

When Turbin arrived a few minutes later, Lynch reacted in an agitated fashion.

"Why you wanna block me in, brother?" Lynch asked Turbin.

Jeff Zelevansky/Getty ImagesMarshawn Lynch was visibly uncomfortable during his exchange with reporters Wednesday, a day after abruptly ending his Super Bowl media day session.

Lynch created a stir Tuesday at media day, although the NFL indicated that he might not be fined.

"Players are required to participate and he participated," league spokesman Greg Aiello told ESPN.com.

The Pro Football Writers of America, however, was not satisfied with Lynch's actions Tuesday.

In a statement released Wednesday morning, the PFWA said it is "extremely disappointed in the lack of meaningful access" that Lynch gave reporters during Tuesday's session.

"Several of our long-standing and high-profile members were appalled by Mr. Lynch's conduct and refusal to answer any questions," the PFWA said in the statement. "We find the statement that by the league that 'Players are required to participate and he participated' to be an affront to our membership.

"However, we are encouraged that the league will continue to closely monitor this situation."

When the NFL opted not to collect Lynch's $50,000 fine in early January, it did so with the understanding that Lynch would comply with the league's policy regarding media availability. Whether Lynch's interview sessions this week are considered compliance is sure to be a topic of debate.

The final media availability sessions for players will be Thursday. The Seahawks face the Denver Broncos in Super Bowl XLVIII on Sunday night at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford.

“

Lynch I appreciate it. But I just don't get it. I'm just here so I don't get fined.

” -- Seahawks RB Marshawn Lynch, on attention he receives from the media

Upon Lynch's arrival Wednesday, the first question was a reference to the star running back's nickname.

"Can you define Beast Mode and what it means to you?" a reporter asked.

"It's just a lifestyle," Lynch said, before glancing down to notice that Robinson was holding a mobile phone, reporter-style.

"Hey, I wanna hear something too, bro," Robinson said, eliciting a grin from Lynch.

Robinson, a fullback, then took over, trying to coax a quote or two from his teammate.

"Hey, what do you think of your fullback?" Robinson asked. "I hear he's a cool brother."

"No!" a grinning Lynch said.

What followed were a few more questions and brief, barely audible answers. That was Robinson's cue.

"I'm gonna slide up in this thing right now, just to break the monotony a little bit," Robinson said. "You can direct your questions to me."

And so it began.

A reporter asked Robinson how Lynch felt about his media responsibilities.

"He hasn't talked to you guys most of his life," Robinson said. "I think he just said that. He just wants to play ball -- Boss."

Another reporter repeated the question of how Lynch defines Beast Mode.

"It's a lifestyle -- Boss," Robinson replied.

Robinson also was asked how Lynch feels about Skittles.

"He loves his power pellets before the game -- Boss," Robinson replied.

Lynch grinned, shook his head and rubbed his face throughout Robinson's routine.

Lynch answered a few more questions himself, claiming his reluctance to give interviews has nothing to do with being misquoted and that teammate Richard Sherman isn't going to teach him to be more talkative.

Regarding the fines, Lynch says the media are trying to take something away from him.

Reminded that the league, not the media, issues fines, Lynch said, "It starts somewhere," referring to this month's complaints.

Eventually, several people were talking -- and none of them were Lynch. Somebody from the back of the group yelled, "Hey, Marshawn! Hey, Marshawn!" -- and that was it. Lynch left.

Ariana Grande: Ignore The Haters -- Four Times We've Loved Your Hair - Hollywood Life

Ariana Grande Same Hairstyle

Getty

Ariana, you were upset by people attacking your hairstyle at the Grammys, a Jan. 28 report claimed. But I want you to know, I love your hair and your beauty style — here are some of my favorite looks.

Ariana Grande, you’ve been criticized that you always wear your hair the same. So much so that you felt the need to write a 250 word explanation on Instagram. But the fact is, you do switch it up, and take risks. Either way, you should do what makes you look and feel great. Here’s why I think you should ignore the haters and celebrate you!

Ariana Grande’s Same Hairstyle — Why She Still Looks Amazing

Ariana, you said that years of dying her hair red for her roles on Nickelodeon shows Victorious and Sam & Cat have left her hair “broken” and wrecked.

You admitted that wigs looked ridiculous on you and extensions are the only way your “destroyed” hair looks normal.

Ariana Grande Cries At Grammys

Ariana, I want you to know that at HollywoodLife.com, we think you are beautiful and you can wear your hair however you want!

In fact, you have switched up your style over the past year. In Dec. 2012, you dyed your hair dark and it looked amazing against your olive skin tone. Your hair looked healthy and shiny.

Then in April of 2013, you went back to red. At the Radio Disney Music Awards, you added an adorable headband, really showing off your girly style. It looked so cute!

More Looks We Love

More recently, you experimented with braids at a Jingle Ball in Texas in December 2013. Again, a super sweet look.

At the Grammys, you rocked your signature style. Listen — there is nothing wrong with having a style that makes you feel good about yourself. Confidence is so important and also so hard in an industry that criticizes and judges appearances so often.

I first met you back in Dec. 2011 and you’ve always loved a retro, vintage, and feminine style. You’ve made it your own and totally rocked it!

How To Make The Growth Process Easier

You said in your explanation: “So as annoying as it is for y’all to have to look at the same hairstyle all the time, it’s all that works for now (AND I’m comfortable for the first time in years). And trust me, it’s even more difficult for me to have to wait forever for my natural hair to grow back and to have to wear more fake hair than every drag queen on earth combined. So PLEASE gimme a break about the hair (or just don’t look at me lol). IT’S JUST HAIR AFTER ALL.”

You’re right — it’s just hair. It should be fun!

I think adding chic accessories like headbands and bows make sense for who you are and are a cleaver way to add where the extensions and your natural hair meet.

Braids are very trendy and adorable as well.

To ensure your natural hair grows fast and is healthy, treat it with a mask like MOROCCANOIL’s Intense Hydrating Mask once a week. Use SHU UEMURA Art of Hair Essence Absolue Nourishing Protective Oil for extra repair.

Do you think Ariana always looks amazing, despite wearing the same hairstyle, HollywoodLifers? Tell us below.
