VIDEO: ESPN anchor Stuart Scott delivers emotional speech about his cancer ... - New York Daily News

ESPN's annual award show, the ESPYs, were especially poignant this year.

Longtime ESPN anchor Stuart Scott, who has been battling cancer since 2007, gave an emotional speech during Wednesday night’s event.

Scott was honored with the Jimmy V Perseverance Award which is named after former N.C. State basketball coach Jim Valvano, who died from cancer in 1993.

“You beat cancer by how you live, why you live, and the manner in which you live,” Scott said. “So live. Fight like hell.”

Valvano had given what has become the most inspiring and well known speech in ESPYs history just two months before his death, leading to the creation of The V Foundation for Cancer Research in his honor.

During Scott’s speech, he admitted just last week he wasn’t sure if he would be able to make it to the show after having four surgeries in one week. Scott attributed his ability to push through to his doctors and the people closest to him.

“This whole fight, this journey thing, is not a solo venture, this is something that requires support.”

Scott ended his inspiring speech by talking about his two daughters, inviting his youngest, Sydni, to join him on stage as he received a standing ovation from the crowd.

“I can't ever give up because I can't leave my daughters. I love you girls more than I will ever be able to express,” Scott said. “You are my heartbeat. I am standing on this stage tonight because of you."
