What's Independence Day without music? Whether it's a Sousa march, or simply a repeated, tone-deaf "U-S-A!" chant, Americans love adding music to a holiday, and the 4th is no exception.

Paul Lamere, director of developer platform for the Spotify subsidiary The Echo Nest, has crunched some numbers and put together this list of the top 4th of July songs by state, along with this excellent patriotic playlist of all the tunes.

Lamere started with a massive pool of music included in the thousands of playlists on Spotify with "Fourth of July" in their titles.

"That set of songs is this really funny mix," he said in a release. "You get the core patriotic songs like 'God Bless America' and 'The Star Spangled Banner,' but you also get summer songs like 'Summer of '69' and barbecue songs like 'Chicken Fried,' and then you also get whatever was popular on the 4th anyway, like 'Blurred Lines.' "

From there, Lamer e looked at how much people listened to those songs on Independence Day 2013, versus during the week after the holiday, which winnowed the list down to songs more strongly associated with the holiday.

Forty-six of the 50 states preferred Miley Cyrus's "Party in the U.S.A.," so he narrowed it down further, looking at the one song that a particular state tended to listen to more on Independence Day than the rest of the year.

Lee Greenwood's "God Bless the U.S.A." was a big winner, appearing in a majority of states. Bruce Springsteen makes two appearances, one for "Fourth of July Asbury Park" and another for "Born in the U.S.A."

John Cougar Mellencamp's "R.O.C.K. in the U.S.A." also makes a few appearances, as does "America F--- Yeah," from the Team America: World Police soundtrack.

Some outliers: Neil Young and David Bowie (a Canadian and Brit, respectively), who make appearances in South Dakota and Maryland with "Rockin' in the Free World" and "Young Americans."

Finally, Lamere and Spotify assembled the five most patriotic states (according to 4h of July streams in 2013). They are, in descending order, Washington, D.C., Nebraska, Delaware, Louisiana and Utah.

Better luck next year, everyone else. Happy 4th.
