MILLBURN — The reward for information leading to an arrest in connection with the deadly carjacking that claimed the life of a 30-year-old Hoboken attorney outside the Mall at Short Hills on Sunday has ballooned to $41,000, officials said.
Taubman Company, which owns the mall, has offered an additional $20,000 for information into the killing of Dustin Friedland, bringing the total reward to $30,000, said Michael McAvinue, the mall's general manager.
The Essex County Sheriff's CrimeStoppers program also increased its reward for information to $20,000 today, according to Kevin Lynch, a sheriff's office spokesman. Morris County's CrimeStoppers program added $1,000 to the reward total today, Undersheriff Staci Santucci said.
Friedland was shot and killed when two men attempted to carjack his silver 2012 Range Rover shortly after 9 p.m. Sunday outside the mall, prosecutors have said. His wife Jamie Schare Friedland, was also at the scene, but was not hurt.
The stolen vehicle was recovered on Renner Avenue in Newark early Monday morning, Acting Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn Murray said, but police have yet to publicly identify the suspects.
On Monday, sources told The Star-Ledger that Friedland may have struggled with the carjackers before he was shot. Murray has not released additional details.
