Black Friday 2013: Holiday shopping season starts just after Halloween ends - WJLA

NEW YORK (AP/WJLA) - The retail industry certainly hopes you enjoyed your Halloween, but now that it's over, it's evidently already time for tinsel and Santa.

"It's too soon," says Sarah Lord. "They just trying to get you in to top to spend money."

At Starbucks, your pumpkin spice latte is now being poured into a holiday cup.

"We did just finish Halloween and now the Christmas cups," says Bonn Buong. "It's never too early for Christmas."

Jonathan Adler in Georgetown began decorating for the holidays last week.

Walmart is among numerous stores who have already rolled out Christmas displays and deals, upping the ante on holiday shopping from the outset of November.

The world's largest retailer is pulling forward by nearly a month seven big deals on items like TVs and tablets that were originally reserved for the day after Thanksgiving and so-called Cyber Monday.

Shoppers will be able to purchase the items online starting shortly after midnight Friday. At the same time, Walmart.com will be pushing another 300 holiday deals on its website, from toys to home decor.

The seven deals include a 42-inch JVC LED TV for $299, a savings of 36 percent, and a 10-inch XELIO tablet for $49, a 51 percent discount. The items will be available while supplies last.

Wal-Mart declined to say whether it would be repeating the discounts during the Thanksgiving weekend.

Meanwhile, Target's website is already encouraging shoppers to sign up for emails about Black Friday deals. Sears, in the meantime, has a prominent button instructing shoppers on how to make sure they receive gifts by Christmas eve.

Macy's, meanwhile, has already posted its Black Friday ad. According to USA Today, a collection of the store's locations in the Chicago area will open on Thanksgiving night for the first time.

But why the sudden holiday rush? The height of the holiday shopping season, the time between Thanksgiving and Christmas, is a week shorter this year.

“For me, when they start pulling the Christmas stuff soon like this, by the time it’s Thanksgiving it feels like Christmas then,” says Cabrena Holecek.

According to the National Federation of Retailers, four in 10 Americans say they begin their holiday shopping before Halloween.

But not everyone likes the holidays coming sooner.

"We need to enjoy one holiday at a time," says Tina Smith.

"They are a little crazy with having Christmas coming sooner and sooner," says Patrick Holecek.
