The fate of the universe is in the hands of a gun-toting raccoon, an anthropomorphic tree and a few other interstellar outcasts in the upcoming Marvel movie "Guardians of the Galaxy," and a new trailer shows the motley crew in action.
They're led by Peter Quill (Chris Pratt), who at one point invokes his reputation as the "legendary outlaw" Star-Lord but is met with blank stares and an exclamation of, "Who?"
After stealing a mysterious orb, Quill comes up against the intergalactic villain Ronan the Accuser (Lee Pace) and then teams up with the muscle-bound Drax the Destroyer (David Bautista), the green-skinned assassin Gamora (Zoe Saldana), and the aforementioned furry vehicular thief Rocket Raccoon (voiced by Bradley Cooper) and treelike humanoid Groot (voiced by Vin Diesel).
Set to "Spirit in the Sky," the trailer, above, previews the movie's blend of cosmic action and cheeky humor; it also shows Rocket and Groot speaking for the first time.
Rocket, flashing some nasty fangs, gets a few choice lines, including, "There ain't no thing like me, 'cept me." Groot is less talkative, and says existentially, "I am Groot."
Directed by James Gunn ("Super") and opening Aug. 1, "Guardians" is set to expand the scope of Marvel Cinematic Universe to the far reaches of space while also connecting to the studio's other franchises, such as "The Avengers."
"Guardians" could prove a critical benchmark for the Marvel brand because, unlike the studio's previous superhero movies, this one is based on a relatively obscure comic.
