49ers Q&A: What's Nnamdi Asomugha's fate? - Sacramento Bee (blog)

Q: Can you see the #49ers getting rid of Nnamdi Asomugha when Eric Wright will be ready to play?

A: Yes, that seems to be the plan. It's not that Asomugha played poorly when he was being used earlier this year. It's that he's 32 and in the final year of his deal. The 49ers must look to the future at the position, and they want to see what Wright, 28, can do to help them determine the future at the position.

Wright likely will be activated during or just after the bye. Nov. 4 is the last day to do so. At that point, they must make a corresponding roster move. If Asomugha indeed is cut, the Saints might be the team that picks him up. Asomugha is inactive today. He's been a healthy scratch the last three weeks.

Q: Why take time & resources to help Wright get back into football when there is no guarantee he will resign?

A: Yes, no guarantees. But Wright is from San Francisco and described playing for the 49ers as a dream come true earlier this month. That is, they should at least have a slight edge in re-signing him if he reaches free agency. They also have the opportunity to extend his contract before March if they like what they see. Trent Baalke's been a fan for some time ...

Q: should the Niners wait until after the bye week to activate Manningham, even if he's ready?

A: Remember - just because he's active doesn't mean he will play. Seven players are not in uniform for every game, after all. Having said that, the 49ers must have thought Manningham was fully recovered from his knee injury when they allowed him to start practicing with the team nearly two weeks ago. They could have done so at any point until Week 11. That they did it on the early end means they are confident in Manningham's knee.

Q: I'm moving to London next year for the Air Force. Any good "American Football Sports Bars" you hear of? Lol

A: Sports Cafe in Piccadilly Circus. Actually, I was seeing American sports - UCLA-Oregon, for instance - on a lot of televisions. You should not have a problem getting your fix. You just may have to stay up late.

Q: Favorite London tourist site?

A: Hyde Park. Walked there every morning. Huge, gorgeous and well-used by the populace. What a city park should be.
